When does the Night of the Refugee take place exactly?
The Night of the Refugee takes places on the night of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June 2019. During this night, participants walk 40 kilometers from Rotterdam to The Hague, from Utrecht to Amersfoort, from Amsterdam to Haarlem, and from Nijmegen to Arnhem. Earlier in the evening, Amsterdam and Rotterdam will also have separate routes of 10 and 20 kilometers.
2019 will see the tenth edition of the Night of the Refugee. For this reason, we'll be organizing a one-off 40-kilometer special edition starting at the Camp Westerbork Memorial Center and ending in the city of Groningen.
When will I receive confirmation of participation?
About a week prior to the event, we'll email you a digital confirmation. You must present the QR code in this email on your phone or in print form at the check-in desk and redeem your personal participation card. So keep an eye on your inbox!
What is the participation fee?
There is no participation fee. Of course, you'll be participating in a sponsor walk, where you'll be raising the highest possible amount for emergency aid to refugees worldwide. We therefore recommend making a donation to yourself upon registration. This will also inspire other participants and potential sponsors!
When is the registration deadline?
Registration closes as soon as the maximum number of participants for a particular route has been reached. In other words, register as quickly as possible because the number of tickets is limited! In the case that we don't reach that maximum number, we'll close the registration one week before the walk. Registering on-site at a starting location is therefore not possible.
How do I get back to the starting location on Sunday morning?
Left your car or bike at the starting location? No problem. The end point of the various walks is always near a railway station. From there, you can take the train home on Sunday morning. Of course, you may also leave your car or bike at the finish location on 15 June.
What is the route exactly?
You can view the exact route via Google Maps on our website. Go to the navigation page, look under routes, and choose your location under Routes & Rest Stops.
Is there a specific end time for arriving at the finish?
No, there is no end time. However, most participants will arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 in the morning. Our volunteers and broom wagon will keep a close eye on the final walkers.
Who exactly participates in the Night of the Refugee?
Everyone who is compassionate about the subject may register as a participant. If you're a minor, you must always be accompanied by an adult participant. The organization reserves the right to deny participation of anyone with racist, sexist, xenophobic, or otherwise discriminatory and/or insulting notions.
Should I bring food and drinks?
Food and drinks are available at the start and finish (for a fee). The rest stops along the way will provide small refreshments (such as a bread roll or banana) and free coffee and tea. If ordered in advance, you will be provided with a simple breakfast at the finish. We'll provide further information right before the start of the event.
Can friends and family come along to cheer me on?
Supporters are always welcome. Your friends/families may wait for you along the route or give you a send-off or welcome you at the start and finish. The finish locations in The Hague, Amersfoort, Haarlem, Arnhem, or Groningen are especially suited for inviting friends and family. Let them give you a festive and warm welcome!
What are the night's festivities/events exactly?
There'll be a festive program at the start and finish locations. Moreover, en route and at the rest stops, there'll also be performances to drag you through the night. Let them surprise you!
I'm looking for posters or other promotional material, where do I find this?
Promotional material for printing can be found on the website. All posters, flyers, logos, and downloads can be found here. For example, print your own poster or use the logo to attract more potential sponsors.
Is it possible to run the route?
No, the Night of the Refugee is limited to walking. We do not allow relay racing either.
Can I cancel my registration?
Unforeseen circumstances may require you to cancel your registration. You can cancel your registration by sending us an email. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the sponsor money.
How big can a team be?
You can ask as many people to join you as you like. As long as registration is open, you can add additional team mates. Of course, we expect every team mate to actively participate in fundraising. On average, every participant raises about 300 euros.
I've signed up as an individual participant but would rather join as a team, is this possible?
Certainly! Please send us your name and which team you'd like to join. Alternatively, when logging in on your personal page, you'll see 'team' at the top. Click here to join an existing team or create your own team.
Can children also participate?
Everyone can participate in the Night of the Refugee. However, children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by at least one adult attending as a participant.
Can I donate from abroad?
Donating from abroad is becoming easier and easier. Our donation module also allows you to easily contribute to the Night of the Refugee from abroad. In other words, provided you have an IBAN number, donations from abroad are now possible! As of this year, you can also pay by credit card.
I've contributed money to a participant, but it's not listed on the relevant profile page. What now?
Please send an email with the name of the person you want to sponsor, including your own first and last name. We'll resolve this issue as soon as possible.
How is the raised money spent?
All money raised between 2010 and 2017 was spent on the Netherlands Refugee Foundation's aid projects. The proceeds of 2017 (1.6 million euros) were allocated and spent on emergency aid in five countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Feel free to take a look at how we spent the money in recent years.
Can I also contribute in the name of my company?
Supporting the Night of the Refugee as a company, or even participating in the 40-kilometer walk, has several benefits. You can also contribute with goods and services. Click here for some examples of things we're still looking for. Have a different idea or proposal? Feel free to send an email to email@example.com.
I would like to help as a volunteer. Is this possible?
Definitely! We'd greatly appreciate it. To ensure that the Night of the Refugee goes as smoothly as possible, we're always looking for enthusiastic volunteers. For example, we're looking for enthusiastic helpers at the start and finish, drivers for our broom wagon, and hostesses and hosts for the registration desk and at the rest stops along the route.
